Don't want to assemble it yourself? We'll assemble it and secure it to the wall — IKEA PAX and wardrobes page.
The IKEA PAX is one of the most common wardrobes in Estonian homes — and one that people often start assembling themselves, then call a professional to finish or fix. Here's what's worth knowing.
How long it takes
Each 100 cm PAX frame takes about 1.5–2 hours. A 200 cm combination (two frames, 236 cm tall) takes 3–4 hours. Internal drawers add roughly 30 minutes per section. A whole wall of PAX units with sliding doors and interior fittings is half a day's work.
Wall-fixing is not optional
PAX is tall and relatively light, which means it can tip over. IKEA includes an anti-tip bracket in the box for exactly this reason. The wardrobe always gets fixed to the wall — into a stud or with an anchor matched to the wall type (concrete, brick and drywall all behave very differently). Skipping this step is the most dangerous shortcut.
Sliding or hinged doors
Hinged doors forgive a lot. Sliding doors don't: if the carcass is even slightly out of level, the doors won't glide properly and can start to catch or come off the track. Getting the carcass level is most of what makes sliding doors work well.
Common mistakes
- Assembling on an uneven floor without adjusting the feet
- Over-tightening cam locks and stripping the chipboard
- Fitting internal runners before checking the carcass is square (equal diagonals)
- Skipping the correct order for the back panel — it's what holds the whole shape square
If a wardrobe has already gone out of shape, it's often faster to take it apart and rebuild it correctly than to patch it. Send us a few photos and we'll tell you what we see and what it will take.
